Anti-Bullying
BULLYING HAS NO PART TO PLAY IN THE LIFE OF BURSAR PRIMARY ACADEMY. EVERY MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL IS AGAINST BULLYING AND EVERYONE HAS A RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE THAT IT DOES NOT HAPPEN.
What Is Bullying?
It is threatening behaviour which deliberately causes distress to others, especially when it is planned and repeated. It may be physical bullying (hurting someone through pushing, hitting or kicking), verbal bullying by calling names, teasing, threatening or being generally abusive or it could be less direct bullying which might mean leaving people out of play and activities or spreading unkind rumours about them. It could be cyber bullying – sending unkind messages to/or about someone either by email or text.
The very first thing we need to do is to ask if we use bullying in any of these ways ourselves? If so, we need to be aware of it and plan how we can stop this behaviour. Do we need to talk to someone about it and get some help?
What should you do if you see someone being bullied?
DON’T ACCEPT IT OR PRETEND YOU HAVEN’T SEEN ANYTHING!
- DON’T SMILE OR LAUGH – the bullies may think you approve.
- TELL THE BULLY TO STOP – make sure that they know you don’t approve.
- TRY TO HELP THE PERSON IN TROUBLE – perhaps invite them to join in your game.
- TELL AN ADULT – this is not telling tales, it is stopping bullying!
- TELL THE SCHOOL COUNCIL – they are here to help.
- TELL A PLAYGROUND BUDDY, PREFECT OR MEDIATOR
-
What should you do if you are being bullied?
DURING the bullying:
- Tell them to stop – make certain they know you don’t like what they are doing.
- Move away if you can – go and join other friends or a different group.
- Tell an adult as soon as possible.
-
AFTER the bullying:
- Tell someone what happened – never keep bullying a secret.
- Tell your teacher or another adult in school straight away.
- Tell your mum and dad – they can help you.
- Keep on telling people so that you are sure something is done to help you – no-one will be cross with you and we can help to sort things out.
