Key Stage 2
Throughout Key Stage Two at Bursar Primary Academy, we use the National Curriculum to ensure that in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 children are taught within the required age related expectations, with support and opportunities made available for catch-up and keep-up if necessary. At Bursar Primary Academy, we use our own assessment tool, to inform our teacher assessments, as well as progress tests termly to underpin and ensure achievement for all.
Our weekly routines include opportunities to participate in a wide variety of lessons. We ensure that all of our children enjoy the full range of creative, thematic lessons that are mapped to the National Curriculum and are produced to ensure that national expectations are covered. These lessons include Geography, History, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, R.E., Art and Design Technology.
In English, our learning follows the National Curriculum for English which follows four areas: Spoken language; Reading (word reading and Comprehension); Writing (transcription, spelling, composition, handwriting and presentation; Grammar and punctuation. In writing lessons, children focus on the style of the author and impact of words and sentences most appropriate for that particular genre. Interspersed through the writing lessons are immersive experience sessions, incorporated in order to create a concrete bridge between the experience and writing. Visits out, visitors in or drama conventions are utilised to strengthen context and build imagination. In reading sessions, children are able to access a range of resources, including full texts, extracts and video clips, to help them build on the skills taught in KS1 and to further develop their reading fluency, reading for information and reading for pleasure.
In Maths, our primary focus is arithmetic: calculation and number skills. Our tailored lesson structure allows us to provide opportunities to learn and apply new skills through the use of Mastery and Mastery at Greater Depth challenges. This allows our children to apply their arithmetic skills to a deeper context, promoting their reasoning and problem solving skills. We use the White Rose Maths scheme, using practical investigation and concrete clarification. Our Maths lessons also provide continual chances to recap and revise previously taught skills (NNLR: Nothing New Let's Review) to address any misconceptions and allow children time to rehearse and revisit these essential skills.
