Key Stage 1
The pupils are taught in mixed Year One and Two Classes.
As pupils enter Year 1 (Y1) they are encouraged to continue the independence they experienced in Early Years, whilst learning the new routines and expectations of the key stage.
Pupils continue to be taught the phonics skills which they need to be successful readers and writers. Our phonics and reading scheme is Read, Write Inc. In the final term of Y1 all children complete the statutory Phonics Screening Test.
During KS1 pupils build on their word reading and comprehension skills. The pupils are exposed to high quality literature to support their reading comprehension and writing skills. The children develop their writing in a cross-curricular approach. As well as the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and Computing, the children are taught the foundation subjects which include, Geography, History, Art and Design, Music, Design and Technology, R.E. and P.E.
Pupils learn new spellings, punctuation and grammar to build fluency and accuracy in writing.
Our pupils follow the White Rose Scheme for Maths. Pupils use the concrete, pictoral and abstact approach to support their learning. Lessons start with NNLR (Nothing New Let's Review). The use of counting, chants, daily arithmetic and challenges aids the retention and application of calculation skills in maths.
Pupils are assessed on reading, writing, SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and maths in Year 2, at the end of KS1.
