Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check - Information for Parents

In June, all Year 4 children take part in the national Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). The purpose of the check is to see how confidently children can recall their times tables up to 12 × 12. Quick recall of these facts is really important, as it underpins much of the maths children will go on to learn in Years 5, 6 and beyond.

The check is completed online and consists of 25 questions. Children have 6 seconds to answer each question before the next one appears. It is designed to be low-stakes – there is no pass or fail – but it helps teachers see where extra support may be needed.

At Bursar, we support the children in lots of fun and engaging ways. We regularly use a website that mimics the official check and also offers speed tests to target specific tables children find more challenging. Alongside this, we continue to use Times Tables Rock Stars to build speed, accuracy and confidence through regular practice.

Please support your child to learn at home, as regular practice will make a huge difference to their confidence and recall. Our aim is to help every child feel secure with their multiplication facts, so they can approach the check – and their future maths learning – with confidence.
