Summer 2 - Week 6 - History

This week, we have been learning all about the Roman invasion of Britain, exploring the many changes it brought and the consequences it had for people living at the time.

To showcase our learning, we created fact sheets filled with interesting information about the Romans and their impact on Britain. We have thoroughly enjoyed this project and have shown great dedication, effort, and pride in our work. Well done, everyone!

Summer 2 - Week 4

Weekly School Update – A Busy and Rewarding Week!

This week has been incredibly busy, and we are so proud of all the hard work and determination shown by everyone across the school community.

A major focus has been our summer term assessments. Students have approached these with great maturity and resilience, giving their very best in each subject. It has been fantastic to see the positive attitudes during test sessions, and the determination to succeed. These assessments are an important opportunity for pupils to reflect on their learning and celebrate the progress they have made throughout the year.

Alongside this, we have also been taking part in RSE Week. This has been a valuable and engaging time for our pupils, providing them with the knowledge and understanding needed. Lessons have been thoughtful and age-appropriate, encouraging discussion, respect for others, and self-awareness. We are proud of how maturely students have engaged with these important topics.

It has been a week that truly reflects both the academic focus and personal development that we value so highly. Balancing assessments with meaningful learning around well-being and relationships has shown just how capable and adaptable our pupils are.

As we move towards the end of term, we would like to congratulate everyone on their continued effort and positive attitude. Keep up the great work — you have all done brilliantly!

Summer 2 - Week 3 - Science

This week, we have been developing our understanding of magnets through hands-on exploration. The children were excited to investigate how magnets work and to make their own discoveries.

We began by exploring magnets around the classroom, testing a range of different materials to find out which ones are magnetic. The children made predictions and then checked their ideas, discovering that some objects were attracted to magnets while others were not.

During our investigations, we also learned how magnets behave when used together. The children noticed that magnets can push away from each other as well as pull together, describing how they can “flip” when two magnets are placed close to one another.

We explored the strength of different magnets and found that some were stronger than others. The children were particularly fascinated to see that magnets could connect even through a table, showing how magnetic forces can act at a distance.

It has been wonderful to see the children so engaged, asking questions, and thinking like young scientists as they explored and experimented.

Summer 2 - Week 2 - History

This week, we began our exciting new history topic all about the Romans and what a fantastic start it was! The children were immediately engaged as we explored who the Romans were and learned some key facts about their lives, achievements, and importance in history.

To help embed their understanding, we used a fun and interactive activity called “Tell Me More” cards. The children really enjoyed this, as it encouraged them to think more deeply, ask questions, and share interesting facts with each other. It was wonderful to see their curiosity grow as they discovered more about this fascinating civilisation.

Using their new knowledge, the children then completed their task, applying the facts they had learned. They showed great enthusiasm and confidence, demonstrating that they were already beginning to build a strong foundation of understanding about the Romans.

This first lesson truly hooked the children into the topic, and we are very much looking forward to continuing our journey back in time to learn even more about Roman life!

Summer 2 - Week 1 - Design and Technology

This week, we had a fantastic time in our Design and Technology (DT) sessions, spending one morning and two afternoons working on our project.

We began by carrying out research, exploring different styles of photo frames and thinking about what makes them both practical and appealing. This helped us to develop our own ideas.

We then focused on building our skills, learning how to use tools safely for sawing and practising how to join materials using glue. Everyone grew in confidence as they worked.

After that, we designed our own photo frames, each one showing creativity and careful thought. Finally, we built our frames, bringing our designs to life.

We were very proud of the finished results and enjoyed taking our photo frames home.

We have absolutely loved our DT sessions this week. It has been a brilliant opportunity to learn new skills, be creative and make something of our own.

Summer 1 - Week 5 - Art Day

We had a fantastic Art Day filled with creativity, experimentation, and inspiration! Our learning was inspired by the work of the famous artist Vincent van Gogh, whose expressive style and bold use of colour helped guide us throughout the day.

In the morning, we explored different shading techniques, learning how artists use light and dark to create depth and form. We then put these skills into practice by sketching our own sunset scenes, carefully applying shading to bring our drawings to life.

Next, we investigated colour mixing. Using only primary colours, we experimented with creating a wide range of new shades. We also learnt how to make tints and tones by adding white and black, helping us understand how artists achieve subtle variations in colour.

In the afternoon, we began working on our final pieces. Inspired by Van Gogh’s distinctive style, we used the impasto technique, applying thick layers of paint to create rich texture and movement in our artwork. It was wonderful to see everyone’s creativity shine as each piece developed.

We are very excited to sharing our finished pieces at our Art parent workshop next week!

Summer 1 - Week 4 - Indoor PE

This week, we took part in one focused tennis lesson where we practised our forehand and backhand skills. The session began with a brief recap of the correct technique, including grip, stance, and swing, to help everyone feel confident before starting the activities.

We worked in small groups so that each player had plenty of turns and support from others. A fun challenge was set up using cones placed around the court, and we earned points each time a cone was hit. This helped us to concentrate on accuracy and control rather than just hitting the ball as hard as possible.

By the end of the lesson, everyone had shown great effort and enthusiasm. It was a positive session that helped improve our tennis skills while also encouraging teamwork and focus.

Summer 1 - Week 3 - Science Experiment

This week in Science, Chestnut Class began an exciting new enquiry: “Does the number of seeds within one plant pot affect the growth of plants?”

To explore this question, we planted cress seeds in pots containing different numbers of seeds. We discussed our predictions, thought about how plants might compete for space and nutrients, and talked about how to make our test fair.

Over the next few weeks, we will:

• Observe our cress regularly
• Measure the height of the plants
• Record these measurements in a clear table
• Compare the growth between pots with different seed quantities

This investigation will help us understand how living things grow and what they need to thrive. We’re excited to see how our cress develops and what conclusions we reach as young scientists.

Summer 1 - Week 2 - Science

This week in Science, we learned about different types of plants. We compared how plants look and talked about what makes them the same and different. We carefully dissected tulips and identified their different parts, such as the petals, stem, leaves, and roots. We then placed each part separately and described what each one does. The children learned how each part helps the plant to grow, stay healthy, and reproduce. This hands-on activity helped to build scientific skills and encouraged careful observation.

Summer 1 - Week 1 - Indoor P.E

This week in indoor PE, we practised our tennis skills. We focused on how to hold the racket correctly and where to face when hitting the ball. We then worked on our accuracy by aiming at cones placed around us in a rectangle.

After that, we worked in pairs to complete a rolling rally. We challenged ourselves to see how many times we could continuously hit the ball to our partner. Everyone tried their best and improved their coordination and control.

Spring 2 - Week 5 - DT Workshop

This week, we were delighted to welcome our parents and carers into school to join us for our DT Workshop. Together, we explored the world of textiles, practising both running stitch and overstitch to help bring the children’s pencil case designs to life.

It was wonderful to see children and adults working side by side, measuring, stitching, problem solving and proudly watching their creations take shape. The workshop was filled with focus, creativity and lots of smiles.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported their child throughout the session. Your enthusiasm and encouragement made the workshop such a positive and memorable learning experience.

Spring 2 - Week 4 - Portals to the Past

This week we had an exciting visit from Portals to the Past to help us explore the Stone Age. We began with an assembly all about life in the Palaeolithic Period and how early tribes travelled to find food. We looked at how this changed throughout the Stone Age Period.

The children then explored a range of fascinating artefacts, including flint, a reindeer antler used to digging, a Stone Age rattle, fur for keeping warm, a bag, and a pot for storing objects.

Next came a quiz! Teams raced to complete the Stone Age quiz using the information boards, showing brilliant focus and teamwork.

We also experimented with Stone Age Communication. Working as a tribe, the children had to build a stone circle without seeing the model. The chief couldn't touch the stones, and the tribe had to use a communication chart to pass on instructions.

We finished by practising our hunting skills, using foam javelines to 'hunt' a mammoth.

It was a fantastic, hands-on workshop and the children learned so much about life in the Stone Age.

Spring 2 - Week 3 - Science

This week, as part of our Science learning, we headed outside to explore shadows. The children had so much fun making different shapes, creating their own shadow puppets and spotting how their shadows changed as they moved around.

We also talked about the moment when our shadows disappeared, and the children shared some brilliant ideas about why this might happen.

Everyone had a lovely time investigating and discovering how light and shadows work.

Spring 2 - Week 2 - World Book Day

Chestnut Class had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day this year. We all came to school in our pyjamas so we could truly curl up and get cosy with a good book. The children loved settling down in their comfy outfits, ready for a full day of stories and activities.

We began our morning with the story of Gustavo the Shy Ghost. We talked about the characters, shared our thoughts and enjoyed reading the book together. The children completed a range of creative activities linked to the story, which have now been added to our special Chestnut Book of Books.

Our second story of the day was The Bear and the Piano. The children drew the front cover, wrote a message in a bottle and created their own thoughtful reviews of the story.

To finish our day, we explored the beautiful book, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore. The class were inspired by the magical world of books and enjoyed producing more pieces for our ever-growing Book of Books.

We have had a fantastic World Book Day, exploring a range of wonderful stories and creating lots of lovely work to celebrate our love of reading. Chestnut have certainly shown how special books can be!

Spring 2 - Week 2 - World Book Day

Spring 2 - Week 1 - Indoor PE

This week in our indoor PE session, we focused on developing our running skills. The children practised keeping their bodies upright, lifting their knees straight up and down, using their arms to help with balance and speed, and running on the balls of their feet. Everyone worked really hard to refine these techniques, and it was brilliant to see their confidence grow as the session went on.

Spring 1 - Week 5 - Science

This week in Science, the children carried out a practical investigation to find out which type of soil absorbs the most water. We tested four different soil types: chalky, peat, clay and sandy, carefully measuring how much water each one absorbed.

The children made predictions, observed closely and recorded their results just like real scientists. After testing each soil type, we discovered that sandy soil absorbed the most water.

Sandy soil absorbed the most because it has larger particles with bigger gaps between them. These gaps allow water to move through and be absorbed more easily than in soils with smaller, tightly packed particles.

The children showed brilliant teamwork, curiosity and scientific thinking throughout the experiment.

Spring 1 - Week 5 - Art

What a fantastic Art Day we’ve had this week! The children spent the whole day exploring a wide range of artistic skills and techniques, and their enthusiasm was brilliant from start to finish.

We began by practising block printing and experimenting with different shading techniques. The children worked step by step to build their skills, becoming more confident as the day went on. We also spent time learning about primary, secondary and tertiary colours, using this knowledge to help us make thoughtful choices in our artwork.

In the afternoon, we brought all of these skills together to create our final piece: a cityscape of London in the style of Alfred Wallis. The children took real care with their colour choices, textures and composition, and the results were absolutely stunning.

Well done, Chestnut Class—you were creative, focused and full of brilliant ideas throughout the whole day!

Spring 1 - Week 4 - Our Book of Books!

This week, Chestnut Class has absolutely loved continuing our journey through The Day I Fell into a Fairytale by Ben Miller. Each day, the children have been excited to dive back into the story, eager to find out what happens next and full of brilliant predictions about the magical twists ahead.

We have also enjoyed adding to our Book of Books, where the children have created wonderful drawings and small creative responses inspired by the story. It has been lovely to see their imagination come to life as they illustrate their favourite characters and moments.

Our shared reading time has become a real highlight of the day – the children can’t wait to turn the next page!

Spring 1 - Week 3 - Gymnastics

This week in gymnastics, Chestnut Class have been working hard on developing their rolling skills. We focused on three key rolls: the log roll, teddy bear roll, and egg roll.

The children practised each movement step by step, thinking carefully about body control, smooth transitions and how to keep their shapes tight and consistent. They learnt how small adjustments—such as straight legs in a log roll or a tucked body in an egg roll—can make a big difference to the quality of their movements.

Everyone showed brilliant determination and teamwork, supporting each other to improve and perfect each roll.

Spring 1 - Week 2 - Geography

This week in geography, we learned about the difference between human features and physical features. We discussed how physical features are natural parts of our environment, while human features are things that people have built.

We then explored different areas of Cleethorpes, looking carefully at photographs and examples from the local area. The children took part in a fun quiz to test their knowledge by deciding whether each feature was human or physical.

To finish the lesson, the children sorted the features into a table in their books, helping them organise their learning and explain their choices clearly.

Spring 1 - Week 1 - Gymnastics

Our focus this week in gymnastics was on exploring three different balances. The children practiced each balance individually, concentrating on control and posture. After this, they worked in small groups to combine the balances into a short sequence. This teamwork encouraged creativity and collaboration, as each group designed their own unique routine.

It was fantastic to see everyone working together and showing great determination!

Autumn 2 - Week 7 - It's Christmas!

This week has been full of festive fun and unforgettable experiences! We started with a magical trip to see the pantomime ‘Beauty and the Beast’, which had everyone laughing, cheering, and joining in the fun.

Then, we had a very special visit from BBC Radio Humberside on their Santa Bus—what an amazing treat to be part of their festive celebrations!

To top it all off, we welcomed Santa himself and one of his elves into school. The children were thrilled to meet them and share their Christmas wishes.

It’s been a week full of joy, excitement, and festive spirit—what a wonderful way to celebrate the season together!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Autumn 2 - Week 6 - DT

This week, Chestnut Class had an exciting DT Day! We began by learning all about hygiene and safety when preparing food, including why it’s important to wash our hands, clean surfaces, and use knives carefully. After that, we explored the ingredients for our soup by doing a taste test to decide which flavours we liked best. We then practised our knife skills, chopping a variety of vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, and onions. Finally, we tasted and evaluated our soup, thinking about what worked well and what we could improve next time in terms of taste, texture, and presentation. It was a fantastic day full of teamwork and new skills!

Autumn 2 - Week 5 - Writing

In a writing session this week, we have learned how to edit and improve our sentences to make our work more effective and engaging. We strengthened our writing by adding powerful verbs and descriptive adjectives, as well as using fronted adverbials. We then applied these techniques when writing our very own diary entries.

Autumn 2 - Week 4 - History

In our History lesson this week, we were up and coming film directors making a movie trailer for a film all about Grimsby in the 15th-16th century and the impact King Henry III had on Grimsby. The Abbey and Nunnery were shut down. The land was given to the rich who helped the King. People had to go to a new kind of church and follow new rules.

Autumn 2 - Week 3 - Religion and World Views

As part of our Religion and World Views topic, we learned about the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the key beliefs and practices that guide Muslims in their faith. We discovered their names—Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj—and explored what each one means and why they are important. To help us remember and explain what we learned, we created a 3D model showing each pillar with its name, meaning, and significance.

Autumn 2 - Week 2 - Fishing Heritage Centre Trip

We had a wonderful day at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre! We explored the fascinating history of the fishing industry, learned about life for fishermen and their families, and even stepped aboard a traditional trawler. This visit links perfectly to our history topic, where we are learning about the history and origin of Grimsby. Our curiosity shone through as we asked thoughtful questions throughout the day, making it an enjoyable and educational experience for everyone.

Autumn 2 - Week 1 - Indoor P.E.

This week, we began our new gymnastics unit with a focus on balancing. We explored different ways to balance on one leg, experimenting with arm positions, body posture, and core control to help maintain stability. Everyone had a chance to try out a variety of balances.

After that, we got into small groups to practise our balances together. We supported each other, gave feedback, and worked on improving our technique. It was a great start to the unit, with lots of creativity and teamwork on display!

Autumn 1 - Week 7 - Art Day

We had a fantastic Art Day where we delved into the fascinating world of Cubism. Inspired by artists like Picasso, we explored how abstract shapes and perspectives can transform everyday subjects.

To begin, we experimented by cutting up images of faces and musical instruments, rearranging them to create bold, abstract compositions. This activity helped us practise our pencil control and apply a range of shading techniques we’ve been learning.

Later, we created our own Cubist-style self-portraits, combining geometric shapes, varied angles, and expressive shading. To finish, we took time to evaluate our work, reflecting on what we liked, what we found challenging, and how we might improve next time.

It was a brilliant day full of creativity, exploration, and artistic growth!

Autumn 1 - Week 6 - Mental Health Day

We came together to support Mental Health Awareness Day by wearing Yellow. In the afternoon, we took part in a special mindfulness session, spending time on calm and relective activities such as colouring, word searches, mazes, and quiet reading while listening to soothing music. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to slow down, relax and think about the importance of caring for our mental wellbeing.

Autumn 1 - Week 5 - Computing

This week in Computing, we watched a short clip of Batman and discussed how the story could be told in an alternative way. As a class, we explored different ideas and then created our own storyboards to plan out a new version. Using these storyboards, we worked in iMovie to design and create our own trailers. This gave us the chance to practise our iMovie skills before moving on to turning the whole story into a complete video later in the topic.

Autumn 1 - Week 4 - Mini Careers Fair

This week, our children enjoyed a fantastic mini careers fair. They had the chance to talk with visitors about their jobs – exploring favourite parts, challenges, and the skills needed.

We also discussed how these careers connect to Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and our local area. The children asked brilliant questions and showed real enthusiasm throughout.

A huge thank you to our visitors for sharing their experiences, and to the children for their curiosity and excitement about the future!

Autumn 1 - Week 3 - Religion and World Views

This week in Religion and World Views we acted out the story of Arjuna and Krishna in freeze frames. First, we showed Arjuna’s sadness as he faced family members on both sides of the battle and did not want to fight. Next, we showed Krishna giving advice, reminding Arjuna of his duty to stand for what is right. Finally, we showed Arjuna lifting his bow, ready to do the right thing.

The moral of the story is that sometimes we face very difficult choices, but it is important to do our duty and stand up for what is right, even when it feels hard. We learnt this story to help us understand Hindu beliefs about duty (dharma) and making the right choices, and to think about how we can make good choices in our own lives too.

Autumn 1 - Week 2 - Outdoor PE

This week in PE, we practised our running skills through a series of relay races. We focused on running techniques, including staying on the balls of our feet, keeping our arms at a right angle, and taking big strides. The relays gave us the chance to apply these skills in short bursts of running and to work as part of a team. To finish the lesson, everyone completed a 400m run, using the techniques we had practised to keep a steady pace.

Autumn 1 - Week 1 - Welcome!

The children in Chestnut have made a fantastic start to the year, settling into their new classroom with positivity and enthusiasm. They are already beginning to embrace the routines of the day and have thrown themselves into a range of fun and engaging activities. It has been lovely to see their confidence growing as they explore new learning opportunities, strengthen friendships, and begin to feel at home in their new class. Their smiles and eagerness to learn are already making this term feel very special.
