Autumn 1 Week 7

Autumn 1 Week 6

Another fantastic week of learning in Year 2!

In Science, the children have been learning all about reptiles. They enjoyed discovering the different characteristics of reptiles and exploring what makes these animals unique.

In Computing, we learned about some of the important pioneers of computing, including Charles Babbage, Ada Lovelace, and Alan Turing. The children explored how their ideas and inventions helped shape the computers we use today. We also investigated what can be found inside a computer, learning about components such as batteries, storage chips, sensors, and cameras.

In History, we continued our learning about the Great Fire of London. We were excited to welcome a visitor from Alfresco Learning, who helped us understand why the fire spread so quickly. The children learned about the materials used to build houses at the time, including wattle and daub, and how drought conditions caused the mud to crack, making buildings even more vulnerable to fire. They also discovered how rebuilding with stone and clay helped make buildings safer. To put their learning into practice, the children worked together to rebuild Tom the Baker's bakery using these stronger materials and successfully kept him dry!

Well done to all the children for another week of enthusiastic learning and excellent participation. We are very proud of all their hard work!

Autumn 1 Week 5

We have had another fantastic week of learning! This week, we launched our exciting new history topic, The Great Fire of London. The children have been fascinated to discover the story of the fire and learn how it all began in a bakery on Pudding Lane. We explored why the fire spread so quickly, thinking about the wooden houses, narrow streets and dry conditions at the time. The children have shown lots of enthusiasm, asked some brilliant questions and really enjoyed stepping back in time to London in 1666. We can’t wait to continue our journey and discover even more about this incredible event in history!

In Writing, we have been focusing on the story Owl Babies. The children have been exploring a range of verbs to describe the owls’ actions and thinking carefully about how word choices can make their writing more interesting and engaging.

In Maths, we have continued our work on place value, learning how to compare numbers using the greater than and less than symbols. The children have also been ordering numbers by size and explaining their reasoning using mathematical vocabulary.

In Science, we have been learning about amphibians and discovering what makes them different from other animal groups. The children enjoyed exploring the characteristics of amphibians and learning about their life cycles and habitats.

In PSHE, we have been exploring the concepts of our busy place, middle place and happy place. We discussed how different feelings affect our emotions and behaviour and learned a range of strategies to help us move out of our busy place and return to feeling calm, settled and ready to learn.

Well done to all the children for another week of hard work, curiosity and enthusiasm in their learning!

Autumn 1 Week 4

Another brilliant week of learning!

In Art, we completed our final Kandinsky-inspired pieces, using everything we have learnt about abstract art to create fantastic 3D masterpieces full of shape, line, colour and creativity. The children were incredibly proud of their finished artwork and enjoyed showcasing the artistic skills they have developed throughout the topic.

In Reading, we have been exploring a range of different text extracts each week to build fluency, confidence and expression. Through speedy reading challenges, fluency pyramids and performing aloud to one another, it has been wonderful to see everyone becoming increasingly confident and expressive readers.

In Science, we have been learning about birds, exploring their key characteristics and discovering what makes them different from other animal groups. The children enjoyed identifying features such as feathers, wings and beaks, and learning how these help birds survive in their habitats.

In Maths, we have been focusing on writing numbers up to 100. The children have practised reading, recognising and recording numbers accurately, using their understanding of place value to support their learning.

What a fantastic week of learning. Well done, everyone!

Autumn 1 Week 3

We have been very busy this week and are proud of all that we have achieved!  We took part in voting for our School Councillors and selected our new My Happy Mind Heroes, learning about responsibility and leadership. We also have decided on our subject ambassadors. This is for the children to champion a particular subject for the year and promote their love of their subject in class and outside of school! We wonder what exciting subject opportunities the children will have throughout the year?

Autumn 1 Week 2

This week has been full of exciting learning opportunities across the curriculum. In Art, we explored the work of Kandinsky and discussed his use of colour, shape and pattern. In Science, we learnt about different animal groups and how they can be classified. During English, we enjoyed reading Owl Babies and used the story to inspire our discussions and writing. In Maths, we focused on place value, developing our understanding of numbers through practical activities and problem-solving tasks.

Autumn 1 Week 1

We have had a fantastic start to the new school year and the children have settled into their new routines brilliantly. It has been wonderful to see new friendships beginning to form and existing friendships continue to grow. The children have enjoyed getting to know their teachers and classmates through a range of activities. Together, we also created our Class Charter, discussing how we can work together to make our classroom a happy, safe and respectful place for everyone to learn and succeed. We are going to have a brilliant year in Sycamore!
