Autumn 1- Art
This term in Art, the children have enjoyed exploring a range of exciting artists, techniques and creative ideas. We began by learning about the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky, looking closely at his use of colour, shape and pattern. The children created their own Kandinsky-inspired artwork using bold colours and geometric designs to express their ideas and emotions.
We also explored abstract art, discussing how artists can use colours, lines and shapes to create artwork that does not always represent real life objects. The children enjoyed experimenting with different materials and techniques to create their own unique abstract masterpieces.
Later in the term, we investigated sculptures, learning about how artists can create three dimensional pieces of art. The children planned, designed and built their own sculptures, developing their creativity, problem solving skills and fine motor control.
We are incredibly proud of the imagination, enthusiasm and artistic skills the children have shown throughout the term, and they have thoroughly enjoyed expressing themselves through a variety of creative projects.
Autumn 1- Science
Over the past few weeks in Science, we have been learning about different groups of animals and exploring what makes them unique. The children have investigated birds, amphibians, fish and mammals, learning how scientists classify living things based on their characteristics. We discussed the features of birds, including feathers, wings and beaks, and discovered that most birds lay eggs. When learning about amphibians, the children explored fascinating life cycles, including how animals such as frogs begin life in water before developing lungs and living on land. Our study of fish focused on their habitats, scales, fins and gills, helping us understand how they survive underwater. Finally, we learned about mammals and identified the key features that all mammals share, including having hair or fur and feeding their young with milk.
Throughout the topic, the children have enjoyed sorting animals into groups, comparing similarities and differences, and using scientific vocabulary to explain their thinking. They have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm during discussions and investigations. This learning has helped the children develop their observation, classification and reasoning skills while gaining a greater understanding of the amazing variety of animals that live in our world.
