Summer 2, Week 7!

In our penultimate week of Year 2, the classroom buzzed with creativity as we brought our glove puppet designs to life! A huge thank you to all the wonderful adults who joined us — your help made this magical experience possible.

On Tuesday, we had a go at the running stitch, and although it was a bit tricky at first, the extra practice really paid off. The children showed such determination and skill, and the results speak for themselves.

Puppet-Making Fun in Year 2!

Take a look at the photos to see our fantastic, hand-crafted puppets — we’re so proud of them!

Summer 2, week 6!

It has been wonderful to welcome Sycamore Class back into Year 2 following their exciting transition week in Year 3. The children returned full of enthusiasm, sharing stories of their experiences and ready to dive back into learning with fresh energy and confidence. It has been lovely to see how the week away has inspired a sense of maturity and curiosity, and they have quickly settled back into the familiar routines of Year 2 with smiles on their faces.

We began the week with an exciting and engaging outdoor learning experience – a Beach Day at Bursar! This special event served as a creative stimulus for our upcoming writing, and the children thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in the activities. Our morning began with imaginative play in the sandpit, where the children worked collaboratively to build intricate sandcastles and proudly decorated them with their own hand-crafted flags. To add to the seaside atmosphere, we enjoyed some cool, refreshing water to stay hydrated and energised.

One of the highlights of the day was our role-play activity in the "Bursar Beach Ice Cream Shop." Children enthusiastically assumed roles as customers, waiters, and waitresses, practising key social skills and exploring real-life applications of money handling at the tills. This activity not only sparked their imaginations but also laid the foundation for some fantastic writing opportunities. We are all very excited to read the children’s recounts of their beach day experiences in the coming days.

In Mathematics, our focus has been on developing our understanding of positional language. The children have been learning how to describe movements and turns using terms such as clockwise and anticlockwise, building on their prior knowledge of telling time. They have confidently explored quarter turns, half turns, and three-quarter turns, both practically and through problem-solving tasks. There has been lots of laughter and movement as we made ourselves (just a little!) dizzy putting these new concepts into practice.

In PE, Sycamore Class continues to develop their athletic abilities with great enthusiasm. This week, we have been practising a variety of fundamental skills including jumping, throwing, and batting. The children have demonstrated excellent teamwork and coordination, and it has been wonderful to see their growing confidence and enjoyment in physical activity.

Summer 2, week 4!

This week, our classroom was full of excitement and discovery! After carefully observing their transformation over several weeks, we finally released our beautiful tiger butterflies into the wild. The children have been captivated by the entire life cycle – from tiny caterpillars to chrysalides, and finally to fully-formed butterflies. It has been a truly magical experience to witness this process first-hand. We also enjoyed making meaningful comparisons between the butterfly life cycle and other life cycles, including that of humans – a fantastic way to deepen our scientific understanding.

We also celebrated our Sports Day, and what a day it was! A huge thank you to all the adults who joined us to cheer on the children – your support means so much. We were thrilled the weather stayed on our side, allowing us to enjoy a packed day of fun events, including the bean bag throw, sack race, football dribbling, egg and spoon race, vortex throw, and running races. Well done to all the children who took part with such great enthusiasm and team spirit!

In Music this week, we’ve been learning to play chords on the ukulele!
We’ve been getting to know the names of the four strings using the fun acronym “Good Children Eat Apples.” This week, we’ve started learning where to place our fingers on the frets to play different chords. It’s definitely a bit tricky remembering everything at once, but the children have been giving it their all – I’m really proud of how hard they’ve tried!

Summer 2, week 3!

In Geography, we have been learning about how climate change impacts out world! This week we looked into how it affecting the colder parts of our world. After learning about the glaciers, ice sheets and icebergs, we went outside to look at the ice we previously left in a tuft tray. As most of us predicted – in the time it took us to do our learning – the ice had melted! And this is what is happening on a much larger, scarier scale right now due to global warming.

In English we have been writing sentences using exclamation marks. We have lots of inspiration after reading our class book ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch’! We have been focusing on our spellings, particularly those words that use the ‘cious’ and ‘tious’ sounds. I was absolutely delighted when I noticed so many children using words such as ‘suspicious’, ‘delicious’ and ‘vicious’ correctly in their writing!

This week in PHSE we have been looking at keeping ourselves healthy. Lots of us realised after discussion, that we don’t drink enough water! Especially in this beautiful weather we have been having!

Summer 2, Week 2

In music this week we turned ourselves into a drum set by splitting into three groups. One group played the bass part on the djembe drums, another played the snare using tambourines, and the third group used shakers to play the cymbals. It was a lot of fun, even though it was a bit tricky to stay in time and not speed up!

Sycamore Class has been busy preparing for Sports Day with lots of fun and active challenges! We've been practising our balance by walking carefully with quoits on our heads, trying not to let them fall. We've also been dribbling footballs around cones to build our coordination and control. To top it all off, we've enjoyed some exciting races to get ready for the big event. We're looking forward to showing off our skills on Sports Day!

In maths, Sycamore Class has been learning all about statistics. We've been drawing and interpreting data using pictograms, bar graphs, and tally charts. To help us understand how bar charts work, we even used counters to build our own! Soon, we’ll be putting our new skills to good use by recording our house points with tally marks.

Summer 2, Week 1

This week, Sycamore Class have embraced their creativity in Art by exploring landscape painting, inspired by the work of Rebecca Vincent and David Hockney. The children experimented with colour mixing, using black and white to adjust shades and tones. They also explored shape, pattern, and texture, applying techniques such as stippling to enhance their compositions. The resulting landscapes are vibrant, expressive, and something the whole class can be proud of.

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of time. To support this learning, the children created large-scale clocks on the floor and took on the role of the minute hand themselves — an engaging, hands-on approach that brought the concept to life. While telling time can be challenging, especially recognising “quarter past” and “quarter to,” the children have shown great perseverance and are making fantastic progress.

In Music, we were excited to be introduced to a new instrument — the ukulele. We began by learning how to hold the instrument correctly and identifying the frets and strings. Building on our prior knowledge of rhythm, including half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes and sixteenth notes, we have started to play in time with our partners. It has been a joyful and musical start to the term.

Summer 1 Week 5

We've had an exciting time in computing this term as we've been learning all about coding! We’ve been using simple instructions — just like telling a friend how to play a game (“take three steps forward, then jump!”) — to tell computers what to do. Using the “Dance Party” app, the children have been programming characters to dance, and I’m so impressed with how quickly they’ve picked up this new skill!

In science, we've been closely observing the growth of our seeds and bulbs. So far, we’ve seen very little change in our bulbs, both indoors and outdoors. However, our indoor seeds are beginning to sprout, with long green stems and buds appearing. The outdoor seeds are growing more slowly, and after some great discussion, the class predicted that this is due to the colder weather outside — a fantastic example of scientific thinking!

We ended the term with a special treat — parachute games! It was a fun and well-deserved reward for all the children's hard work and effort over the term.

Thank you, Sycamore Class, for always giving your best and showing such enthusiasm in everything you do. I’m really looking forward to our final term together before you make the exciting move into Year 3!

Summer 1 - Week 4

This week, we have been artists. Focusing on David Hockney and Rebecca Vincent, first we did a silent gallery walk! This meant we could really concentrate on the different shades and tones of colours that the artists used. We also were looking carefully at how they used patterns and lines. Afterwards, we used sentence stems to talk about the artwork with our peers. We had lots of fun getting out the paints and we used black to make our blue colour darker and lighter. This is a really special skill we will use when we paint our own landscape!

In science this week we have planted our seeds and bulbs! Thank-you so much to parents and adults at home who bought in pots. We are keeping some of our bulbs and seeds inside by a window where its nice and warm. Then we are keeping some more of our bulbs and seeds outside where it’s a bit cooler! We will be comparing the growth of them next week and we can’t wait to tell you the results!

We have been writing lists in English this week! The book we have been using for our writing, ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ has influenced us to write about all the different jumpers, socks, trousers and shoes that we think are sold in the clothes shop. We have spoken about how special ‘threes’ help to make the writing more enticing rather than having really long lists. I was so excited to read so many ambitious adjectives in your lists Sycamore class!

Scyamore Class Summer Week 3

In maths this week we have moved on from recognising fractions – to finding fractions! We have been using counters to find halves, quarters and thirds. We are getting really good at learning the key words numerator and denominator! Towards the end of the week, we looked at the difference between unit fractions and non-unit fractions, we looked at how we can recognise these fractions. Some of Sycamore class have already spotted that there is a similarity between 2 quarters and a half!

Sadly, we had our last lesson on our history topic of Neil Armstrong this week. A highlight for me was watching the children pretend to be Neil Armstrong on the moon and float around the classroom! We looked at how we commemorate historical events – which linked in really well to VE day! We discussed how we have a special day to remember the efforts and sacrifices men and women made during World War one and two. We decided to create stamps to commemorate Neil Armstrong!

Sycamore Class Summer Week 2

What a lovely week we have had with the sunny weather! We have enjoyed making the most of the sun by heading over to our forest school to do a fraction hunt! Mrs Drury and myself hid equal parts of shapes and the children had to put them back together. We used lots of mathematical language – in particular, this week we have learnt that the parts must be equal in order to call them one half or one third.

In P.E we have been sequencing movements together. Without realising it – we have been mini choreographers! This week we have started to move t music, we are getting really good at being expressive and creative. Some of Sycamore class have been brave enough to preform!

Sycamore Class Summer - week 1

It’s been an amazing first week back for Sycamore class! Firstly, we are so lucky to have Mr Hudson visiting us weekly for our music lessons this term. This week, he worked on rhythms with us using the drums! We practised our listening skills and soon found out how important it was because there were lots of subtle changes in the number of beats or the pace of the beats when we echoed Mr Hudson.

We also had a lovely practical science lesson looking at the similarities and differences between seeds and bulbs. We learnt that both bulbs and seeds can grow into plants but that they look very different – for example bulbs have roots! (Which we could see when we looked at onions). We are looking forward to growing some seeds and bulbs in our future science lessons.

In writing this week we have been very bossy! Using imperative verbs to write sentences we have been ordering around our main character from our text ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ by Julia Donaldson. Some of us have even been using adverbs, making sure we describe exactly how the giant should clean his face and brush his teeth. Next week we will be re-telling the story in the past tense.

KS1 Spring 1 - Week 3

KS1 Spring 1 - Week 2

The children have blown all staff members away this week with their amazing retainment of knowledge from the week before in Geography, focusing on the similarities and differences of Cleethorpes and Oarai.

The children have been using adjectives to describe missing animals. The children were exploring expanded noun phrases and the use of conjunctions.

Finally, in Computing the children have been taking their first footsteps in the digital world and learning alternate ways on how to communicate with people digitally. A super week!

KS1 Spring 1 - Week 1

The children have had a wonderful first week back. The children have loved their writing sessions this week, focusing on a new book ‘Lost and found’. They are working hard on nouns and adjectives.

In PE, Twist and Flip visited us and will be joining us weekly! We absoloutely loved our first session together.

We have started a new topic in Geography, in which we are focusing on the differences and similarities between Cleethorpes and Oarai, Japan.

I wonder what next week will bring?

KS1 Autumn 2 - Week 5

This week, we had a DT day and made apple crumble! We loved it and it tasted wonderful. We started by preparing our ingredients, weighing and mixing the apple and the curmble ingredients and then put it all together! We took it home to cook and the next day we couldn't stop talking about how much we enjoyed it and how our families wanted the recipes!

KS1 Autumn 2 - Week 4

This week, we went on a walk in our local area. We went searching for materials that we have been learning about in science. We found brick, glass, plastic, cardboard and many more! I wonder how many other materials we can find in different places we visit?

KS1 Autumn 2 - Week 3

We had a wonderful week! We have been focusing on Kadinsky and creating some 3D art. We thought of creative ways to bend, fold, twist and layer paper to make a piece of art in the style of our focus artist. We loved it!

KS1 Autumn 2 - Week 2

What another incredible week we've had!

This week, we've been fortunate to welcome several visitors. A dentist taught us about the importance of brushing and caring for our teeth. We also had a visit from the Dogs Trust, who shared valuable tips on looking after dogs. But most importantly, Pudsey made a surprise appearance, hiding in a special spot!

On top of all these exciting activities, we even had odd sock day for support anti-bullying!

KS1 Autumn 2 - Week 1

Welcome back to school, everyone!

It’s been fantastic seeing all of you so eager to dive into new and exciting learning this term. This week, we started exploring Art, focusing on Wassily Kandinsky and his unique use of shapes and colours. The children have done an incredible job with this! We even visited our own school gallery!

KS1 Autumn 1 - Week 7

Our final week before half term has been a great one! Sycamore class has had an amazing first term, settling in beautifully.

In Science, we’ve been focusing on our new topic about humans, specifically how exercise keeps our bodies healthy and strengthens our hearts. The children have been able to see this in action during PE as well!

We also enjoyed a fun Halloween treat, with games and activities in the hall due to our fantastic behaviour!

A great start to the year!

KS1 Autum 1 - Week 6

Another fantastic week!

In Music, the children are learning to play our class song, 'Hands, Feet, and Heart,' on the glockenspiels. We’re making great strides, gaining a better understanding of the different sounds the glockenspiel can produce. In PSHE, we've been focusing on healthy eating, learning to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods. The children have even created their own healthy and unhealthy plates.

We also dressed up in yellow for the Mental Health Awareness day - we enjoyed our day and discussed lots of ways to keep ourselves physically and mentally well. We soon realised that both were as important as the other!

To top off a fantastic week, we achieved 100% attendance which means we get a non-uniform day! We were so excited and proud of ourselves!

Keep it up Sycamore class!

KS1 Autumn 1 - Week 5

This week, Sycamore class have been learning new facts in Geography. They have learnt how to draw the equator on a map. We are now able to understand that we cannot see the equator, but we know that it goes across the world.

In science, we have been learning about reptiles and understanding that they have dry scales and that they don't like the cold! Which is why we do not have reptiles in the UK without a heat lamp.

Over the 5 weeks we have been improving our writing skills and children have seen a big difference in their work by working on the formation of letters and including expanded noun phrases, commas in a list and different sentence types!

We also had two new stars of the week and a behaviour award winner!

What another great week Sycamore have had!

KS1 Autumn - Week 4

We've had a super week.

We have started our new geography topic which is focusing on the continents and oceans around the world! We have learnt different songs to help us remember our new learning. We have also been building an understanding on the importance of healthy eating and why we should have a balanced diet. We have created our healthy eating plates and filled them with food that gives us lots of energy.Following on from last week, we have been focusing on amphibians in science and how they live. We have also learnt that mammals, birds, fish and amphibians all have the same needs to survive but in different ways.

Keep up the great work, Sycamore!

KS1 Autumn - Week 3

We have had lots of fun finding new facts about The Great Fire of London, and understanding how it affected London in 1666. Children have been working on their chronological ordering of events that occurred in London.

Over the past few weeks, we have learnt about mammals and birds and this week we have been focusing on fish in our science lessons. Children have learnt fun facts about how fish breathe underwater and their needs to survive.

Overall, children have been brilliant this week. Keep it up Sycamore class!

KS1 Autumn 1 - Week 2

We've had a fantastic week!

In history, we are enjoying learning all about the Great Fire of London. We worked as a team to help transport water between each other, role playing the Londoners back in 1666 trying to put out the fire! All of the children worked so well together but we soon realised how lucky we are to have the Fire Service! We loved it!

In computing this week, we have learnt how to save an image from Google and edit our work. We used lots of interesting designs, colours and backgrounds to create a timeline of how computers have changed over time.

I wonder what next week will bring?

KS1 - Autumn 1 - Week 1

We have had such a wonderful first week together! We have a class of superstars.

In Read Write Inc, we have been consolidating and learning our sounds. This will occur daily over the term,  helping us improve our fluency. In writing, we have been practicing our transcription and formation of letters. We tried so hard with this!

In maths, we have been learning about ‘place value’, in which we are improving our counting ability and recognition of numbers. In science, our lessons have been about living things and their habitats. Children are now able to identify mammals, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.

In history, we have been focusing on the Great Fire of London. The children have learnt some amazing facts. They know all about where the fire started and why the fire spread so quickly.

I can't wait to see what the rest of the term brings!
