Summer 2 - Week 8
Maths
Today in maths, during arithmetic, the children were really excited to try out our new visualiser to share their understanding of converting improper fractions to mixed numbers. The children were able to use visual representations to show how it is simply dividing the numerator by the denominator. Furthermore, we have been exploring what negative numbers are and where we see them in real life. I challenged the children to order negative and positive numbers on the number line which they completed successfully showing their secure understanding of what negative numbers are and how the ‘larger the number is’ (E.g -43 is smaller than -4) when it is negative, it is in fact smaller. They’ve done an excellent job today! Well done year 5!
PSHE - Fire Saftey with Humberside Fire and Rescue
Year 5 had an informative visit from Humberside Fire and Rescue, where they learned about the vital role the service plays in our community. The team explained where local fire stations are based and shared that there are 43 fire engines across Humberside. Children explored common fire hazards in the home and discussed why they can be dangerous. They also learned about a simple bedtime routine to reduce fire risks, where to place smoke alarms, and how to check them regularly. The firefighters explained what to do in the event of a fire, how to create an escape plan, and the importance of acting safely around fire.
Summer 2 - Week 6
PSHE - Road Safety with Humberside Police
We had a fantastic and informative workshop with Road Safety and our local PCSO. The children learned vital road safety skills, including the importance of stopping, looking, listening, and thinking before crossing the road. It was an engaging session that helped reinforce how to stay safe near roads.
Summer 1 - Week 5
Summer 1 - Week 4
Science
In Science this week, the children planned a fair test to explore how the duration of exercise affects heart rate. They explored the variables (independent, dependent and control variables) to help them design their investigation. After this, they conducted their investigation and found that their heart rate increased when they did more exercise!
PE
Our Year 5 and 6 gymnasts were on an exciting journey as they perfected the art of forward and backward rolls, with an added twist and flip! Under the guidance of our expert gymnastics coaches, the children learned to combine strength, flexibility, and precision to perform these dynamic movements with confidence.
Summer 1 - Week 2
Twist and Flip PE
This week in twist and flip, the children have been exploring activities to strengthen their hands in preparation for future lessons.
Art
In art this week, we’ve been exploring key skills and imitation of David Hockney using oil pastels. The children have explored the colour wheel: primary, secondary and tertiary colours and created their own version using oil pastels. After this, the children explored different blending techniques: dry blending, oil blending, scumbling.
The children will apply these skills in future art lessons when we create our own art work using David Hockney as our inspiration!
Summer 1 - Week 1
Spring 2 - Week 12
Science
Children have learned that one of the key roles of blood is to take oxygen to all parts of the body. Blood that has high levels of oxygen in it is known as “oxygenated blood”. Once this oxygen has been taken to the parts of the body, the blood contains little oxygen and is now known as “deoxygenated blood”. Blood continues to flow around the body so that oxygenated blood can reach the parts of the body, and deoxygenated blood can travel to the lungs to receive more oxygen.
The children were able to model this using a large diagram and counters to show how the red blood cells go from being deoxygenated and oxygenated.
Spring 2 - Week 11
Design and Technology
Yesterday we had a Design and Technology afternoon where our students had the exciting opportunity to work with special guest Jeff Lynne to create their very own light boxes. The session was designed to spark creativity and build important skills, and our students truly embraced the challenge!
Each child started by building their own frame for the light box. Using a technique called a butt joint, they carefully joined pieces of wood together, reinforcing the structure with triangles to ensure the joint was sturdy and strong. This hands-on experience helped them understand the importance of precision and strength in design.
Next, the children used blades to carefully cut out intricate designs on card, which would later decorate their light boxes. This activity allowed them to express their creativity while improving their fine motor skills and attention to detail.
Once the designs were cut out, the children glued the card onto the frames they had built, assembling the final light boxes. As they worked, they were encouraged to focus on their teamwork, taking turns, sharing tools, and collaborating to support one another through each step of the process.
By the end of the session, the children not only created beautiful, personalised light boxes but also strengthened their character by working together, building patience, and developing a sense of accomplishment through shared effort. It was a fantastic afternoon that combined creativity, teamwork, and hands-on learning! Next week we shall add our lighting circuits to the boxes to create the finished product - we can't wait for you to see them!
Spring 2 - Week 10
Maths
In Maths, we’ve been learning how to find the area of compound shapes. This week, we did a fun practical activity using lollipop sticks to create our own compound shapes. By physically building these shapes, the children were able to better understand how to break them down into smaller, simpler shapes to find the total area.
This hands-on approach helped the children to connect what they’ve learned with real-world applications, making the concept of area much clearer. It’s been a great way to apply our mathematical skills in a creative and engaging way!
Design and Technology
In Design and Technology, we’ve been working on designing our very own lightboxes! Over the past few lessons, we’ve explored different ideas and started creating our designs. Next Wednesday, we’ll begin making our lightboxes, and it’s going to be so exciting!
The children will be applying their woodwork skills by using a butt joint to join pieces of wood together and learning how to saw wood accurately. They’ll also get hands-on with electricity, wiring up their lightboxes to create a working light source. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to combine creativity with practical skills, and we can’t wait to see their ideas come to life!
PSHE
In My Happy Mind, we’ve been exploring the 24 character strengths, which are divided into 6 important virtues. This week, the children had a lot of fun playing charades to guess which virtue their friends were acting out! It was a great way for everyone to learn more about these strengths and think about how they can use them in their everyday lives.
Through this activity, the children have gained a deeper understanding of the different virtues and are learning how to celebrate and appreciate their own key character strengths. It’s been wonderful to see the children recognize and reflect on what makes them unique and how they can build on their strengths moving forward!
Spring Week 9
Design and Technology
We had a great afternoon yesterday exploring the skills we will need to use when creating our light boxes for D&T. The children took part in three mini workshops:
- Sawing
- creating joints with pieces of wood
- cutting card with a knife
We had the great pleasure inviting Jeff Lynn from the rotary, who was a joiner through trade, to support the children with the woodwork skills! He shared his expertise with us and will be back in a few weeks time to help the children build their boxes!
Computing
We are excited to share with you how your children have been exploring the world of 3D design using Tinkercad! In our recent lessons, the students have been learning to create their own 3D models, focusing on designing a car from scratch. One of the key techniques they’ve been learning is "stacking"—a method where students combine and layer different 3D shapes to form more complex structures. By stacking simple shapes like cubes, cylinders, and spheres, students are able to build their cars piece by piece, allowing them to visualize how individual components can come together to create a finished design.
Through this process, students have learned important skills in computer-aided design (CAD), which is the digital process used by professionals to create blueprints for products, buildings, and machines. The ability to manipulate shapes, adjust sizes, and rotate objects has helped students develop problem-solving skills and an understanding of spatial relationships. As they stack and combine shapes, they also explore concepts like proportion, symmetry, and design efficiency.
Maths
Let’s talk about perimeter! This week the children are learning all about perimeter, starting with the perimeter of rectangles. We used lolly pop sticks and a dice to create our own rectangle shapes and then calculated the perimeter and explored the different ways of calculating it. The children used their favourite method to work these out. We learned that when finding the perimeter of squares we only needed to know one side measurement because all sides of a square are the same! During the rest of the week we will be calculating the perimeter of other rectilinear shapes and also polygons such as hexagons and octagons
Science
In science today, the children have been introduced to the circulatory system and what organs make up the circulatory system. They also learned how to check their pulses!
Writing
In writing this week, we have started our new written outcome based on the piano. The children are building up to write a letter from the man to his wife whilst in the trenches. During todays writing lesson, the children were exploring vocabulary they may choose to use in their writing piece. We explored the five sense and emotions surrounding the man’s first meeting with his wife! They produced some short pieces of writing to practise their new vocabulary they have learned and did a fantastic job!
Spring 2 - Week 8
Maths
In maths today, we’ve been exploring percentages and how they are out of 100! Children saw that a percentage was a number of parts per hundred. This links to seeing a percentage as a fraction with a denominator of 100. This learning extends to 10% being equivalent to 1/10 and therefore 20% equivalent to 2/10 and so on. Children used a fraction wall to split 100% into different-sized groups and so work out the percentage equivalents of fractions, for example 1/4 is 100% split into 4 groups, 100 ÷ 4 = 25, so 1/4 = 25%.
Spring - Week 6
Behaviour Treat
Silver Birch have really enjoyed taking part in this half term’s behaviour treat ‘Bursar Academy Arcades'.
Spring - Week 5
Maths
We have been spending time competing in the NSPCC Rocks TTRS Tournament!
Each child has a 1 hour time limit- we will be spending 20 minutes on this in school meaning children will still have another 40 minutes to do at home to help us climb the leaderboard. There has been lots of focus going on this morning to raise our place!
Spring - Week 4
Art
In art this week, we have been exploring the media of clay. The children have created their very own pinch pot and have explored using the score, slip and blend technique when joining pieces of clay together. Scoring, slipping, and blending are crucial steps when working with clay because they help ensure a strong bond between pieces, preventing them from falling apart during firing or use.
English
We’ve been acting out scenes from Alma this week to get a feel about how Alma may have been feeling at different stages of the story. The children will be using this to help them write to express the feelings of Alma.
Spring - Week 3
Art
In art this week, the children used inspiration from Paula Wienmink to create their own dragon eye sketches. The children did such a great job and focused really hard on creating their art pieces! They focused on the detail in the eye for their focal point, just like Paula Wienmink.
Geography
In Geography, the children have been using the atlases to support their learning. They used the atlases to find the different continents and oceans and then compared this to maps that included the different biomes around the world. Furthermore, they children explored what latitude lines are and how they are used to measure the distance of a place, on the earth, from the Earth's equator. From this they explored why certain biomes occurred in different locations on the Earth because of the distance that part of the Earth was away from the sun.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been practising using short division. Towards the end of the week, we had to solve multiplication and division problems. This was a great opportunity to apply our learning. We used a combination of short and long multiplication, as well as short division. We had to read the worded problems carefully and pick out the key information we needed to solve the problem.
Spring 1 - Week 2
English
This week, we have been exploring writing a description of the dolls shop in the perspective of Alma. The children used their four of their senses to generate words, phrases and sentences which they will use in their writing piece next week. Along with this, children will also be exploring how to use figurative language to help develop their piece of writing further.
English - Writing
In one of our writing sessions this week, we have been identifying examples of figurative language. We took part in an activity where we needed to find an example in the text and then trade ideas with our friends, until our sheet was full with lots of examples. It was a great way to share our ideas. Well done everyone, great team work!
Spring 1 - Week 1
Autumn 2 - Week 7
Autumn 2 - Week 6

Geography
In Geography we have been looking at the journey of plastics from usage to disposal. We have worked in groups to carry out online research and presented our findings to the class.
Design and Technology - Cooking
In design and technology this week the children have been learning two very important skills: hand washing and knife skills. The children have explored the importance of food hygiene and why it is so important to wash our hands and keep surfaces clean as well as exploring the correct way to hold a knife and two new cutting techniques; bridge hold and claw grip! They all did an excellent job, first practising using plastic knives and play doh to then using some metal knives to cut a potato into wedges. Well done!
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning all about fractions with different denominators and how we can convert them! We’ve also explored converting mixed number fractions into improper fractions and vice versa. The children used manipulatives and visuals to help them with this new concept! They did an excellent job and are beginning to feel much more confident with their fraction knowledge.
Children were also able to see how important it is to be fluent with their times tables as these played a very important part in converting fractions! Times table rockstars is very helpful to use at home to ensure your child is practising their times tables to support them in solving the tricker maths concepts; if you require log in details for TTRS, please get in touch and we will be happy to send these over!
English Writing
In English this week we have been exploring cohesive devices to help us create sentences about Donald Trump and the positives and negatives of him being president in the USA! The children have really gotten stuck into this topic exploring the reasons for and against and have been able to use linking words to help their sentences flow. We also incorporated a bit of drama using a conscience alley and had partner tennis debates! Some of the children were brave enough to present their debate to the rest of the class. Well done!
Autumn 2 - Week 3
Y5/6 Reading Workshop
Thank you to our lovely parents that attended the reading workshop. We explored different comprehension questions and focused on retrieval, inference and vocabulary.
Computing
Silver Birch have been making gifs in Computing. They have been including tips for being kind online. The children have loved experimenting with the animation website. They were able to export their gif and add it to the PowerPoint they have been creating too. Well done everyone!
Visit https://brush.ninja/create/animation-maker/ if you would like to have a go at making gifs at home.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been exploring equivalent fractions. The children have learned what it means for something to be equivalent and the steps they can use to determine and find other equivalent fractions. We used a variety of representations in the classroom to help the children understand the relationships. This work also really challenged their times table knowledge as they needed to know these to help them find equivalents!
English Writing
In writing this week, we have been continuing to write our narrative based upon Daniel entering a wonder - I prehistoric wonderland filled with dinosaurs. The children have been planning their ‘problem’ phase where a volcano erupts and approaches our protagonist, Daniel. The children were able to explore different vocabulary, figurative language and emotions that the dinosaurs and Daniel face.
Science - Electricity
In science this week, the children explored variations within circuits and the effects of having fewer or more components. They constructed a range of series circuits with varying number of components. They were able to work methodically by adding one components at a time to a circuit and observe any changes each time. Ask your child what happened when more components were added to a circuit?
Autumn 2 - Week 2
Dogs Trust Workshop
Silver Birch have really enjoyed their workshop with Amy at Dogs Trust. We have learnt lots about a dog’s body language and what it is telling us so we know the best ways to respond and interact with dogs.
Autumn 2 - Week 1
Anti-Bullying Theatre Performance
Today, we watched a powerful performance of ‘Hope’, a heartfelt play focused on anti-bullying. The cast were fantastic at delivering a crucial and important message.
Maths
In Maths this week, children have been learning about factors, common factors and prime numbers! They have learned that a prime number only has two factors, one and itself!
Autumn - Week 7
History
In English this week we have been looking at possible theories for the Maya mass abandonment. We debated which theories would be most and least likely.
Autumn - Week 6
English
In English this week we have been exploring the use of subordinate conjunctions to make subordinate clauses. We have used the acronym ISAWAWABUB to help us. We also played a match up game: matching the subordinate clause to the main clause.
Final still life artwork
The children completed their still life artwork by painting their chocolate themed still life drawing. They took inspiration from Pieter Claesz's artwork for their background and table cloths and then studied the colours of the still life's different objects carefully before mixing accurate watercolours and considering their brush thickness. Next week the children will evaluate their work.
Autumn 1 - Week 5
In R.E, the children have been developing their understanding of God's characteristics, focusing this week on his love. The children shared how they could show people their love this week and had lots of lovely ideas.
Autumn 1 - Week 4
In english, the children have been working hard on their handwriting, spelling and understanding of different punctuation within our sentences. This week our writing detectives spotted all the punctuation mistakes in our lists and possessive sentences before correcting them at each table. They even wrote their own challenges (full of mistakes) for the next pair to correct.
Online safety
In computing, we have been looking at our digital world. Firstly, the children looked at how gender roles are portrayed in the media; the children were very clear in their opinions that any gender can do any job or household responsibility. Secondly, the children have generated many tips for staying safe online and were clear in their understanding of the importance of following these tips. The children have shared all this understanding on slides in their powerpoint through titles, images and text. They have thought carefully about the visual appearance of their slides too.
Autumn 1 - Week 3
In art, the children have been developing their understanding of using different art pencils (from 6B to HB) to create tone and texture in their drawings, along with cross hatching too. The children used these skills when reproducing the goblet and background in one of our Pieter Claesz still life paintings. Next week we will look at scale and proportion
Chocolate and the Mayas.
The children had a fantastic chocolate workshop with Trace from Lab Cocoa. The children learned about the raw ingredients needed for chocolate and how chocolate has changed over the years - starting as a bitter drink with the Mayas. The children tasted the four chocolate types - white, ruby, milk and dark, before painting their own chocolate bar to enjoy eating at home.
Autumn 1 - Week 2
In art, the children started learning about our chosen traditional artist, Pieter Claesz. After trading facts about him, they looked at a variety of his still life paintings before choosing their favourite and analysing it. They considered what they could see in the foreground, mid-ground and background; the colours used and the mood it created.
Time to trade.
In history, the children learned more about where the Mayas lived and how these different locations - Northern Lowlands, Central Lowland and Southern Highlands - gave them different objects which they could trade. The children enjoyed trading their objects in order to acquire a full bank of objects. Next week the children will investigate the Mayas and chocolate!
Autumn 1 - Week 1
In history we have begun our learning about the Maya civilisation. We have learned where in the world they lived and compared this to where we live and where the Egyptians lived. Additionally, we have placed the different Maya periods on a timeline and compared their place in history to that of other periods of history, which we have previously learned about.
