We have been learning about characteristics and inheritance in science and how this leads to variation. By linking it to dog breeds, children were able to discuss this confidently.

In writing, children have been reviewing their Eden Camp experience and exploring their favourite part of the day.

Cleethorpes Academy have been in school doing some work with the children around reading at secondary school. They participated fantastically and were able to demonstrate reading aloud with expression and team work.

In maths, we are working on a project to plan a holiday based on the weather, distance and budget. We have been reading data from line graphs and bar charts to help us understand the climate patterns in a country.

Year 6 had a fantastic time visiting Cleethorpes Academy yesterday this week; they used recycled materials to make a bee, and used pastels to print art work in the style of a totem pole. It was also great for the children to have an insight into secondary school.

Major Oak - Summer 1 - Week 5

In our My Happy Mind lessons, we have been working on how we can relate to others and build relationships through active listening and making connections.

We have started reading our new class book ‘When the Sky Falls’ this week. This week, we finished chapter 1 and have been exploring the use of language and retrieving key information from the text.

In art, children have been using their creativity to begin to draw a landscape in the style of Hockney. The are focusing on shape, lines, colour, texture and patterns, and will apply their colour mixing and pastel skills later.

This week, the year sixes have enjoyed their end of SATs celebrations! We are so proud of the hard work and resilience they have demonstrated. The children have played games, had picnics, enjoyed ice creams and taken part in different activites together.

Our new geography topic is focused on Brazil! We started by naming and locating the countries and capital cities in South America. We then utilised our research skills to learn more about Brazil and present our understanding.

In art this week, we used oil pastels to create a colour wheel, recapping our knowledge of primary, secondary and tertiary colours. The children then used dry blending, oil blending and scrumbling techniques to see which method they preferred.

We are lucky to have Twist and Flip delivering our gymnastics lessons this half-term. We started this week by practising different stands, rolls, handstands and cartwheels, and will be building on these skills as the weeks progress.

Major Oak - Spring 2 - Week 5

What a fantastic afternoon we had making our light boxes which we have been planning any researching over the half-term. The children used different glues to join the wood together and create strong joints, before drawing and cutting out their design using a Stanley knife and then assembling the final product!

In computing, we have been using tinkercad to edit pre-built 3D car designs ready for creating our own designs next week. We have edited the colour, size and shape of different components as well as adding extra details.

In history, we have been learning about the Windrush generation and why this group of people immigrated to the UK. Children had to use their communication skills to share their understanding with their group and record it on their jigsaw puzzle.

As part of our athletics unit in PE, we have been practising relay racing and applying our sprinting skills from last lesson.

Major Oak - Spring 2 - Week 2

Fantastic collaboration during DT this week; children have been working on the design for their light boxes, including the wooden frame, circuit and front design. We have thought carefully about the materials we will need and how to make the light box safely. Next, we will practise the key skills needed to cut and join wood.

Major Oak - Spring 2 - Week 1

This term, our history unit is all about British history. We started today by discussing things which have influenced Britain and worked collaboratively to ask and answer questions to develop our understanding of the positive and negative impacts

In maths, we are now working on algebra. We have been using cubes and base 10 ones to help us visualise, form and write expressions. 

We have been practising our retrieval skills by drawing a map of the key places Stanley and Zero visited and saw in the chapters we read this week.

Children have been so engaged when reading Holes; it has been amazing to see the love of reading shown. We have almost finished reading the book!

Major Oak - Spring 1 - Week 6

This week, we completed our art unit inspired by Paula Wiegmink. Children applied their learned skills to mould, slip and score their clay to create a really effective design based on their earlier drawings. The teamwork, perseverance and reflection shown throiughout the lesson was was fantastic to watch.

NSPCC Number Day

The children dressed up in celebration of NSPCC Number Day as a reminder of how having fun with numbers is an important part of our daily lives!

We have been busy competing in the NSPCC Times Table Rock Stars Competition for Number Day!

 

Major Oak - Spring 1 - Week 4

We are very lucky to have had Chris from Chatta in school this week as part of our continued work on oral rehearsal in writing. The children were a real credit to themselves when sharing their fantastic ideas! We have been using 'Alma' as our stimulus. 

The outcomes of our writing to express feeling this week have been fantastic. Children have really challenged themselves with the vocabulary they have used and have built tension using thoughts and actions to describe.

Major Oak - Spring 1 - Week 3

We have been exploring shadow formation, including the difference between opaque, translucent and transparent objects and how this affects the shadow. We have also been considering how the distance between the light source and the object changes the size of the shadow.

In maths, we have now moved on to learning about the relationship between fractions and percentages. As part of our daily arithmetic practice, we have been focusing on recapping square and cube numbers and order of operations

Major Oak - Spring 1 - Week 2

We have been working on our fitness in PE by using a variety of movements in different routines.

This term in computing we are learning about 3D printing, computer aided designs and coding. We have begun using a website called tinkercad for our 3D designs and started by building a simple house. Children can access this website from home if they want practise their coding and design skills.

In art, we are studying the work of Paula Wiegmink and have been practising shading skills such as stippling and cross hatching to create highlights and shadows. This has a great link with our science topic of light too!

Major Oak - Spring 1 - Week 1

In maths, we are learning about decimals and have been using counters to represent different numbers up to three decimals places. Children have identified the value of each number in the tenths, hundredths and thousandths columns.

We started our new science topic on light this week. We began by discussing sources of light and how we see. The children observed the changes in the pupil and iris when light became brighter or dimmer.

In our reading lessons, we have begun reading the book Holes by Louis Sachar. We are learning more about Stanley and Camp Green Lake each lesson! We are practising different reading skills through a variety of activities; this week we worked collaboratively to summarise key events. 

Major Oak - Autumn 2 - Week 7

As part of our maths topic on units of measurement, we have been estimating and measuring the mass of objects in the classroom using grams and kilograms. We have also been learning how to convert between metric measurements by multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.

We have been embedding reading skills and getting festive this week through comprehension of a Kevin the carrot Christmas video! It got very competitive when we were checking our understanding by answering a range of questions using Blooket.                                        

Major Oak - Autumn 2 - Week 6

This week, we prepared our final product for our design and technology cooking project. We were able to apply all the skills we have learned around nutrition, food hygiene and safe cutting skills to prepare the fish and chips.

In reading, we have been focusing on giving evidence to support our inferences in reading today by giving quotes and linking ideas across the text.

Major Oak - Autumn 2 - Week 5

In science this week, the children have been conducting their investigation on what happens to the volume of a buzzer when more cells are added to a series circuit. The children predicted that the more cells we added, the louder the buzzer would be. We tested this using a decibel meter and found the children were correct! We have also been learning about independent, dependent and control variables. 

In yoga, we have been learning new poses such as boat and lotus. The children have been building on their confidence with different poses each week, which they will soon be applying to their own yoga routine. 

 

 

Major Oak - Autumn 2 - Week 4

Debates and balanced arguments is our current focus in writing. We have been working on including cohesive devices to link ideas and formal language throughout. Students have enjoyed participating in our class debate, ensuring they give arguments for and against which are backed up with evidence. We are excited to transfer these verbal skills into our written work next week!

Major Oak - Autumn 2 - Week 3

In science, we are learning about electricity including different components and types of circuits. We have been investigating complete and incomplete circuits and discussing whether the current is able to flow and why. To extend our learning, we have been considering how different components, such as buzzers and bulbs, can be made louder or brighter. We have been applying working scientifically skills to make predictions and draw conclusions. 

Major Oak - Autumn 2 - Week 2

In design and technology this term, we are focusing on food technology and will be designing a healthy alternative to fish and chips. This week, our aim was to test different food items to allow us to design our product. We tried different potatoes, carrots, sauces, peas and different fish. They were all cooked using minimal oil and salt with the aim of being healthy. It was fantastic to see so many children trying the different foods and explaining if they liked them and why.

This week, we have started our new creative writing unit based on an extract from 'The Nowhere Emporium.'

Children have been working on using the five senses and figurative language to generate a description of a magical shop. They have shown some fantastic collaboration when thinking of ideas together to help with their independent writing!

Major Oak - Autumn 1 - Week 7

In writing, we have been reviewing our grammar learning from this half-term, including using relative clauses, subordinate clauses, parenthesis and fronted adverbials. 

We worked in groups to try to escape from the haunted house by solving clues to give us the code for the locked door! Great teamwork and problem solving skills. 

Major Oak - Autumn 1 - Week 6

In science, we have been extending our learning on microorganisms by beginning to classify them based on their appearance, properties and positive and negative impacts.

We have also been completing a class experiment to observe the appearance and development of mould on a piece of bread!

 

Major Oak - Autumn 1 - Week 5

One of our key focuses as a class this week has been building our team work and collaboration skills when working in pairs or small groups. 

In English, we have been working together to learn our spellings and recap our knowledge of adverbs, fronted adverbials and prepositions so that we can confidently apply this in our writing. We have been practising this in different contexts, including playing games, completing crosswords, identfying features in texts and discussing when and how featrures have been used.  

Major Oak - Autumn 1 - Week 4

This week, we started a Times Table Rock Stars competiton and children have been working very hard to improve their scores and earn points for their team! We can't wait to see who will win when the competition ends next week. 

In our art lessons this half-term, we are focusing on the skills of shading, tone, scale and perspective, producing art work in the style of Pieter Claesz. Here are some great example from this week. I can’t wait to see what our artists can produce with their developing skills. 

Major Oak - Autumn 1 - Week 3

Year 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to have Trace from Lab Cocoa visit them this week to support our learning on the Mayas. They even got to paint their own chocolate bar! Children were able to find out more about how and where chocolate is produced, as well as learning about the cacao tree. Everyone got invovled and tried a variety of chocolate, incluiding raw cacao nibs! We begun to learn about the history of chocolate, and will be building upon this in our next history lesson. 

Major Oak - Autumn 1 - Week 2

This week, Major Oak have continued their learning about the Mayas in history. To help with their understanding of the important trades that took place during the height of the Maya civilisation, children were split into three groups and traded different goods found in the three main regions of the Yucatan Peninsula (northern lowlands, central lowlands and southern highlands). They showed fantastic team work as they built upon their historical knowledge, as well as considering how the geographical features of each region were reflected in the resources they had. We are looking forward to learning more about the Mayas!

Major Oak - Autumn 1 - Week 1

Major Oak enjoyed practising their tennis and circuit skills during their first indoor PE lesson this week. We will be building on our core and motor skills through a variety of multi-sport circuits this half-term as well as promoting team work.
