Summer 2 - Week 6
In Science this week, we have been learning all about mirrors. We learnt that the first mirror was invented back in 600BC. We know that there are different types of mirrors, such as: plane, convex and concave. We did 3 different activities to investigate mirrors.
Activity 1: We put two mirrors parallel to each other like a ‘mirror tunnel.’ We then placed a toy duck in between them with it facing one mirror and the other mirror behind it. We looked at how many different reflections we could see.
Activity 2: We then had two mirrors joined together at one edge using tape to make the effect of a hinged door. We then put the duck in between the mirrors. We looked at how many reflected ducks we could see. We then moved the mirrors closer together and learnt this created more reflections compared to when we moved them apart which made less.
Activity 3: For our final activity, we used our mirror to see if shapes had the correct lines of symmetry drawn on them. We also used a mirror to complete the other half of some given letters.

Summer 2 - Week 5 - Transition Week
This week, we have spent the week in our new classes ready for September. We have been learning about the theme 'Pledges to the Planet'. We have done a range of activities to show our teachers our amazing; reading, writing and maths skills! We have done a sports day style PE lesson. For those of us in Year 5, we have played an orange trading game, used our reasoning and problem solving skills and been on a nature walk to focus on our 5 senses. We then returned to the classroom to draw what we had seen, smelt, heard, touched and tasted. Well done, everyone!
Summer 2 - Week 4
This week, we went to Havelock to take part in a science workshop. We learnt all about how a shadow can change shape and size as the light source is moved away or around an object. We started off by measuring the shadow of a Lego figure at 5 different distances and found out that as the light source moved further away, the shadow got bigger/longer. The second activity we took part in was where we had an object and moved the light source around it. We then drew around the shadow. This allowed us to see how it had changed at different points as the light source was moved around. The final activity we looked at was the reflection of light off a mirror. We used the light source to reflect the light at different angles off the mirror and we drew the light rays. We found that the angle of incidence (light going towards the mirror) is always the same as the angle of reflection.
Summer 2 - Week 3
This week we got to take part in our sports day and we all had so much fun! The weather was lovely and everyone had a great time! You all tried extremely hard and should be proud of all your efforts and achievements, great job everyone!
Summer 2 - Week 2
This week, we have really enjoyed our Geography session. We learnt all about the countries of Europe and their flags. We particularly enjoyed singing the continent song to help us learn the 7 continents which we then labelled in our books. We then moved onto looking at the shapes of each country in Europe and we were given a name of one of the countries which we then had to find in the room and stick it on - we had to pay attention to the shape to help us! We then labelled the different countries in Europe and then challenged ourselves by naming some of the countries which are landlocked. Well done, Chestnut!
Summer 2 - Week 1
We have had a super busy first week back. Year 4 have been practising their times tables ready for next week! We have all been practising sports day ready for Monday. We have also really enjoyed our writing lessons where we have been looking at our new stimulus 'Peter Pan' where we are working towards writing an alternate portal story. We are going to be looking next week at where we could end up instead of Neverland.
Summer 1 - Week 6
Chestnut have been working really hard and creating a fact file all about the changes and consequences of the Roman invention. They looked at the writing changed from before the Roman invasion to after, we also looked at how the Romans introduced roads and stone buildings. Well done Chestnut they look fab!
Summer 1 - Week 5
We modelled how plants reproduce through pollination. In groups, we were given different parts: petals, anther, stigma or pollinator. The petals were brightly coloured to attract the pollinators to their flower. The pollinators arrived at one flower and the pollen rubbed off the anther onto the pollinator. The pollinator then flew to another flower where the pollen was passed onto the stigma. This then allows seeds to grow in the ovary to eventually make a new flower.
Summer 1 - Week 4
This week, during our science lesson, we worked in partners to set up our experiment. We have learnt what plants need to survive and now we are going to experiment whether cress seeds will grow better with or without water. We are going to be observing them over the next few weeks to see which grows the best. After setting up our experiment, we then wrote the aim of our experiment, what we predict, the equipment we used, the method and also got our table of results ready. Let’s see which grows the best!
Summer 1 - Week 3
We have been looking at the roots of plants. We looked at their 4 main roles as well as using magnifying glasses to look in detail at what the roots look like. We also looked at the main parts of the plant (flower, leaves, roots and stem). We looked at the functions of each of these and labelled our own flower in our books. We then looked at how water is transported around the plant from the roots. Amazing work!
Summer 1 - Week 2
This week in our writing lessons, we have been learning about the argument for and against AI replacing humans. We used all of our knowledge on artificial intelligence to conduct a debate. We split into two teams: one for robots replacing people and the other side against. We were given time to work together in our teams to gather our ideas making sure we included: exaggerated language, facts to support our argument and rhetorical questions with direct address to get other team thinking. We then debated. We had an amazing debate and we’re all awarded with 10 house points and 5 dojos for all of our hard work and amazing ideas. WELL DONE CHESTNUT!

Spring 2 - Week 5
DT DAY
Over the past couple of days we have been working incredibly hard to create our very own photo frames. We started off by looking at the key skills: sawing, using a hot glue gun and also the purpose of the bench hook. We then carried out Market research to find out what our sample would like and what they looked for when buying a photo frame. We then designed our very own photo frame. In the afternoons we have then put our skills to the test and sawed our wood, used a hot glue gun to put our frame together and then we designed it. We finished off by evaluating our product. Well done Chestnut! They look amazing!
Spring 2 - Week 4
Science Workshop
On Tuesday, we had a brilliant time in a Science workshop where we learnt about climate change and how it is affecting our world. We learnt how our world is heating up due to climate change. We then acted out what we can do to prevent and help our world!
We can replant trees for everyone that we cut down. We need to only buy what we need so that we cut down on the waste. We need to stop littering and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle when we can. We can ensure that we don't put rubbish into the oceans which can harm animals.
Writing our Diaries
This week we have been working incredibly hard on writing our final piece of our diary entries on our stimulus ‘Mega City’. We are making sure to check our spellings as well as uplevelling our vocabulary. We have written a 3 day diary using 'show not tell' sentences to describe how we are feeling.
We have shown great resilience and determination while writing these diaries and we are looking forward to starting our new writing sequence next week!
Dance Fest!
We were so lucky to go to Dance Fest on Comic Relief Day. We went all in our red and learnt a variety of different styles of dance. We started by learning a street dance which we then worked together to get into formation and then perform to everyone else.
We then learnt a ballet dance and had great fun doing our turns and also running to the wall at the end of our routine!
We then ended by learning the cha cha with a partner. This was full of laughs especially when the adults had to join in!
Spring 2 - Week 3
WORLD BOOK DAY 2024
We started by sharing our favourite book with our classmates which was lovely to hear the different stories everyone had bought in and the reasons behind choosing them. Then, the whole of Year 3 and 4 joined together to take part in a football/reading quiz with the National Literacy Trust. We then all took part in a treasure hunt where we used our pirate skills to solve the riddles and puzzles in each class in search of the treasure! To end our morning, we did a book recommendation based on the book that we brought in or chose off the shelf. We included a picture of our favourite part of our book, a summary about what the story is about and then a rating of our book.
We then started our afternoon with our blurb challenge what we used blurbs from different Peter Pan blurbs to design our front cover based on what we had inferred from the blurb. We also had the chance to design our very own pirate flag!
Spring 2 - Week 2
This week in our writing lessons we have been super busy learning all about the different features of a diary to prepare us for next week when we are going to be planning and writing our own diary based on our stimulus 'Mega City'. We have looked at lots of description and used show not tell sentences to add descriptions for feelings.

Spring 2 - Week 1
This week we have been learning how to talk about our family in Spanish. We started the lesson by practising our numbers 1-20 in Spanish. We then learnt how to say 'Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister, Grandma and Grandad in Spanish'. We then created our own family tree with our own family members and used 'se llama/o' to say their name. We are incfredibly proud of our family trees!
Spring 1 - Week 6
This week we have been learning about the five pillars of Islam. We made our own 3D models of the five pillars of Islam. We can't wait to bring them home!

NATIONAL STORY TELLING WEEK!
This week we have been celebrating National Story Telling Week in so many different ways. On Monday, we did a class assembly to learn all about National Story Telling Week. On Wednesday we had a storyteller into school. On Thursday, we took part in a 'Dream-up a world storytelling project with Steven Camden'. We really enjoyed designing our own door and then creating our characters and their stories thinking about how they linked to the rest of the class - We all lived on the same street! And to end the week we spent some time retelling a well-known story 'Three Little Pigs'. We retold this through drama. It has been a great week we have had lots of fun!
Spring 1 - Week 4
This week both Year 3 and 4 have been wokring hard to master different skills.
Year 3 have started a new maths topic, Length and Perimeter. They were busy showing off their incredible ruler skills to draw, measure and peer assess each others learning. Well done Year 3!
Year 4 have been focussing on mastering multiplying and dividing. We have been looking at a variety of different methods to help our learning including a practical lesson where we needed to exchange our 10 counters for ones. They did extremely well! Well done Year 4!
Spring 1 - Week 3
This week we have been history detectives. We have been learning more about the Stone Age and looking at a Neolithic settlement called Skara Brae. This is the best-preserved Neolithic settlement in Europe. We did a virtual tour of Skara Brae looking at all the different parts of the settlement. We then looked into the tools they used in the Iron Age.

PORTALS TO THE PAST
We have all had an amazing day today learning about the Stone Age. We looked at the three different periods and how humans changed throughout the Stone Age. We found out why it was called the Stone Age as well as looking at artefacts from the Stone Age (flint, antler pick and arrow heads). We have worked in teams to compete and rebuild Stonehenge models but in silence. We have had a great day doing some time travelling!
Spring 1 - Week 1
This morning we were super busy in Chestnut classroom simmering our Spanish learning while the Year 4's were swimming. We practised how to ask how people are as well as a short sentence about us (name, age and birthday!). We were also competitive when we did a low-stakes Kahoot quiz to test our knowledge. The top 3 received dojos as their prize. Well done everyone!
Autumn 2 - Week 6
We have had an incredibly busy and exciting week this week! We started the week learning to play a new song on the glockenspiels. On Tuesday we had a fantastic time at the panto ... Oh yes we did! We also had a special visitor join us in our singing assembly and we all got an early Christmas present! Then to end an exciting week we made our own pizzas and met Santa on his sleigh in our car park.
Autumn 2 - Week 5
This week in our Geography lessons we have been looking at how jobs are different depending on where we live. We compared jobs in Grimsby to the jobs in Lincoln. We looked at Job descriptions as well as having a debate to argue which place we would rather live and work in and why. We looked at human and physical features to help us decide.
Autumn 2 - Week 4
This week we have looked at a new text in our reading lessons called 'Dolphin Boy'. We have been predicting what the story is about as well as answering retrieval questions. We have also looked at a poem and played a matching game to practise our retrieval skills!
Autumn 2 - Week 3
This week we have been investigating with magnets. We looked at different materials on which were magnetic and which were non magnetic. We also looked at how the different magnetic poles reacted when put near each other. We learnt that opposites attract and the same poles repel.
Autumn 2 - Week 2
This week we started by celebrating Diwali. We learnt about what a Rangoli is and how they can be made from a range of different materials. We took inspiration from different Rangoli patterns and we created our own designs for our peacock feather. We then put all of our designs together to create our class Rangoli peacock. We used bright and bold colours to create an effective piece of Rangoli artwork.
Autumn 2 - Week 1
This week we have been finishing our art unit and we have been working towards our final piece. We started the week by choosing the instrument we would like to use. We then cut different pictures of that instrument into six pieces. We mixed them together and picked 6 different pieces of the same instrument and created a piece of cubist art inspired by Pablo Picasso. We then sketched and shaded it using all our skills that we have learnt this unit. We then evaluated our work.
Autumn 1 - Week 7
We have been making our own cubist inspired art. We had a range of different faces which we cut into sixths and created artwork using the different faces. We then sketched these and shaded them in using a range of different techniques such as; scumbling, cross-hatch and stippling.
Autumn 1 - Week 6
This week in History we have been looking at the History of Grimsby. We started our week by retelling the story of Havelock and Grim. We learnt how Grimsby got its name. Later on in the week, we were learning about Grimsby's past and learnt that Grimsby was one of only seven places in Britain to be granted with a charter. We then looked at the seal which was used to seal the charter. The children then designed their own seals.
Autumn 1 - Week 5
This week in our writing lessons we have been looking at writing a persuasive advert. We started the week by ordering the dangers from the most important to the least important and explaining why we put them in those places. We have moved onto looking at the key features of a persuasive advert as well as explaining why some of these dangers are dangerous. We have looked at the difference between fact and opinions and are getting ready to start planning next week!
Autumn 1 - Week 4
This week in music we have been learning to find, make and move to the pulse of our song. We loved finding different ways to move to the pulse of the song as well as playing the music using our glockenspiels. We are growing in confidence each week when performing this song either by singing or playing our instruments.
Autumn 1 - Week 3
This week Chestnut class have been really busy learning all about how Fossils are made. We learnt that there are six main stages to the formation of fossils. In our Science lesson, we made our own fossils. We used playdoh and pushed a leaf into the playdoh. We then carefully removed it and were impressed with our results! This represented a fossil. We then sequenced the stages of fossil formations and added a sentence to describe each picture.
Autumn 1 - Week 2
This week in RE we have been looking at what makes us us. We have learnt that although we can be different things to different people we are still one person. The children really enjoyed making their cubes to show what they mean to people.

This week we have had a very busy week settling into our new classes and learning our new routines.
We had a fantastic Music lesson where we were learning a R&B style song called 'Let your spirit fly'. We had great fun learning it and finding the pulse using different parts of our body.
